SPP-QNV: Assimilation of radar data in COSMO-2

Radar data is gaining importance for the assimilation into and the verification of high-resolution numerical weather prediction models. This project aims at improving quantitative precipitation forecasts.

MeteoSwiss takes part in the evaluation and development of the "Latent Heat Nudging" rainfall assimilation method for high-resolution numerical weather prediction models.

Radar Observations
The figures illustrate the potential of inserting radar data into a numerical weather prediction model. Shown are 1 h precipitation sums of a severe convective storm as observed by the Swiss Radar Network (a) and as simulated with the high-resolution COSMO-2 (grid spacing 2.2 km) without (b) and with (c) radar assimilation.
